Biohacker Review: A Comprehensive Nootropic Regimen from a Credentialed Team
Note: This is a review of truBrain's original racetam-rich Nootropic, I have not reviewed their current line of products.
As a lifehacking, productivity-junkie you should always be looking for products that "small chunk" good consumption habits for you. That's exactly what truBrain does. The monthly Nootropic package they send you contains 44 different packets, each containing 4-6 capsules of different Nootropics.
There are 3 different types of packets in the truBrain package...
A.M Packets - Great for my morning productivity and creativity.
P.M Packets - The Afternoon package is actually more energizing than the morning packet, which is great for me because the afternoon is usually when I most need the energy. Several times I noticed a 'second wind' of energy 3-4 hours after consuming the P.M packages.
Turbo Packets - The first time I tried a turbo was late in the afternoon, after about 7 hours of web development work. I could definitely feel the energy 'kick in' from the Turbo capsule; I did about 45 minutes of pretty rigorous exercise, had dinner while discussing strategy with a client then went out on the town to a language exchange event where I practiced my second language for several hours. I felt quite energetic 'partying sober' till about 1:30 AM and then slept quite soundly.
The primary ingredient in the product is Piracetam, the daily dosage includes 3 grams of Piracetam. I'm a lifetime fan of Piracetam, it's the original Nootropic and has been thoroughly tested for about half a century. Piracetam is also one of the safest things you can put in your body. Interestingly, Piracetam has no LD50, meaning that in rat testing there is NO upper limit lethal dosage of Piracetam. It also contains Pramiracetam, which is supposed to be like next-level Piracetam. I was excited about trying Pramiracetam for quite some time but I really couldn't tell much of a difference.
It contains 8 Nootropic ingredients that sustainably increase Serotonin, Dopamine, and Acetylcholine. It also contains 250 milligrams of Choline which is an important Nootropic cofactor to the Piracetam. Every doctor or expert I've talked to about Piracetam has said that it's a great idea to take Choline with it. Dosages of over 3-4 grams of Piracetam a day can lead to a nervous anxious 'cracked out' feeling, which I've experienced myself. Choline balances this out so you are energetic but clear-headed.
Unlike some other Nootropic supplements I've tried, there's not a strong 'kick in' 20-40 minutes after taking it for the first time. The first few days of taking the product are a loading phase for getting your system accustomed to certain nutrients, after which the day-to-day effects of taking the product are more pronounced. So maybe not the Nootropic stack for those demanding instant results.
The month that I was on truBrain I was juggling a lot: launching another services division of my marketing firm, exercising consistently, improving my 2nd language, various stressors related to settling into my lifestyle as an American ex-pat in South America, and on top of these things I challenged myself by doing a 'sober trip' (meaning I stayed completely sober) while simultaneously going out to socialize 3-5 times a week in downtown Medellin, Colombia which is a quintessential sexy, cosmopolitan vice city. Despite having this much going on I noticed myself managing stress exceptionally well, the entire month I had maybe two or three nights that I laid awake for hours in bed, which is great for me!
You can drink coffee while on it, without feeling cracked out which I appreciate because one of the very best coffee shops in South America is about a 5-minute walk from where I live! It's sharply packaged and I got some interesting questions while taking the supplements in public.
The Snooze test: I like to use Nootropics as part of my waking ritual. At first light or whenever my alarm clock goes off in the morning, I will hit the snooze button and take my Nootropics, drink a glass of water and then go back to bed. I usually set snooze to go off in 20-minute intervals, so by the time the alarm sounds again, the Nootropics should be kicking in and waking me up. truBrain did ok with the snooze test but did not outperform coffee or three 800-milligram tablets of Piracetam.
Looking at the ingredients I would think this supplement would be fairly effective at inducing lucid dreams but I noticed no increased lucid dreaming during the month I took it.
truBrain follows the supplement company business model I trust the most, in that they are transparent about the management of the company. Among the highly credentialed team members listed on the website are Dr. Christoph Michel of the University of Geneva and Dr. Andrew Hill of UCLA. truBrain is unique in the Nootropics industry in that it is backed by a high-end Los Angeles venture capital firm, Start Engine (a division of Accenture, veteran venture capitalist Paul Kessler's company) of which I think adds further credibility to the product.
Speaking of venture capitalists, my understanding is that for the most successful VC's the most important criteria for picking the companies they invest in is the team behind the companies. I recommend picking the supplements you invest in the same way.
truBrain is one of the more expensive supplements on the market, this makes a little more sense when you realize a single packet (of which you take two a day) contains 4-6 different capsules. When you consider the number of supplements you are taking its price point makes more sense.
The product is a little more expensive but it has a money-back guarantee so if you can afford it I would encourage you to try it! If you try it, take 2 minutes to leave an honest review of the product on the Limitless Mindset Mind Power Marketplace listing for truBrain.
