Biohacker Review: This epigenetic vitamin is (not so) tasty!
I got 10 grams of powdered Nicotinamide Riboside from Youth & Earth and while it's one of the better NAD+ sources, I don't love its taste. It's far from the yuckiest-tasting powdered supplement I've tried so when I do another cycle with NR (Nicotinamide Riboside) I'll take it capsuled.
I did a meditation session after taking a higher dose of NR which seemed to result in a slight uptick in my HRV coherence scores as measured by my Heartmath device.
Overview of recent Nicotinamide Riboside science
I did a meta-analysis of Vitamin B3, of which NR is a derivative form, a while back so here I'll summarize the more recent science published about it, there have been 15 human clinical trials done in the past five years...
The most recent study, which they called NADPARK, done in 2022 gave either 1000 milligrams of NR or a placebo to Norwegians recently diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. And the outcomes were positive in regards to NR as a neuroprotective therapy, although two of the study authors declared a conflict of interest in regards to an NR patent filed. So I do hope those two authors take all the other authors out for a very fancy dinner when they make the big bucks off their patent!
A collaborative 2021 Swedish-Turkish study of 304 patients (that's statistically significant!) looked at NR as a COVID recovery treatment in combination with Glutathione, l-serine, l-carnitine tartrate, and NAC - a stack they termed combined metabolic activators (those Swedish-Turkish researchers are really good at coming up with catchy names for stacks!) The study found that the time to complete recovery is significantly shorter in the CMA group and concluded that treating patients infected with COVID-19 with CMAs lead to a more rapid symptom-free recovery. This is promising for everyone suffering from long COVID; hopefully, the "public health" tyrants at the FDA don't manage to restrict access to NR the way they did with NAC!
The next study that caught my eye was on kids' poop - more specifically autistic kids' poop. They were looking at poop because there's a promising connection between autism spectrum disorder and dysbiotic gut microbiota. The relevance to NR is that they also looked at plasma metabolites and they found a strong correlation between NR deficiency and autism. I suspect that a future "cure for autism" will involve a NAD therapy (like supplementing NR) and fecal microbiota transplant, which this study was evaluating.
A Northern European long-term human clinical trial notes that Nicotinamide riboside does not alter mitochondrial respiration, content or morphology in skeletal muscle from obese and insulin-resistant men. I'll mention that the best way to enhance mitochondria in your muscles is 15-minutes of cardio. And if you want to enhance mitochondrial respiration itself, supposed the way to do it is a breathwork technique where you breathe out all the air in your lungs until they are empty and then just wait a few seconds before breathing a new breath in. And that teaches you mitochondria to breathe a little more, at least according to this tantric longevity book I once read.
An Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-controlled Clinical Trial looked at the Safety and Metabolism of Long-term Administration of NIAGEN, which is a form of NR. This 2019 American study focused on the safety of NR; they closely monitored the obese adults given NR for side effects and observed virtually none.
Having now tried both Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN) and NR, NMN is my favorite for the simple reason that it doesn't taste bad at all (as many powdered supplements do).
Importantly, this NMN is COA-verified as pure and free of toxins or additives by an accredited UK lab, as are all of Youth & Earth's products. This proof of purity is what you should demand when supplement shopping, especially when it comes to a product in this price range. Because of their commitment to quality Youth & Earth makes the cut to be included as a recommended Limitless Mindset Secret Society, pick up over £200 worth of their products and you'll be eligible for a 30-minute biohacking consultation and membership in our elite biohacker community.
About Nicotinamide Riboside
NR works deep within your body to help boost NAD+ — the natural fuel every cell relies on. As we age our natural defences and ability to formulate NAD+ drop significantly, resulting in a significant reduction in quality of life with age.
By taking our pharmaceutical grade NR as part of a healthy, balanced diet you can help boost the body’s longevity gene Sirtuin so you can continue to enjoy the quality of life you deserve.
